The MTM Association is proud to offer a variety of training classes to not only help users better understand MTM systems, but to modernize and improve businesses around the world. Please note that some courses have prerequisites, as they are designed to build upon your previously-gained knowledge of time measurement systems in order to give you a more comprehensive and in-depth education.

We instruct distance learning classes online through Iowa State University,  as well as classes in-house in the Chicagoland area and on-site at your location.

Our Courses

MTM-1 Base™: No prerequisite. This 3-day course covers an appreciation of the basics of MTM-1. Laboratory problems and exercises illustrate its principles and use. It is the minimum prerequisite for MTM-2, MTM-UAS, and MTM-MEK, if the student has not received a Blue Card® certification in the full MTM-1 10-day course. A certificate will be issued to the student upon successful completion of this course.

Note: Completion of this course does not constitute a full comprehension of all of the rules of MTM-1. It is also a viable course for people, who would like initial exposure to the principles of MTM-1 and its related family of systems.

MTM-1™: No prerequisite. This 10-day course includes coverage of the theory and principles of MTM-1; laboratory problems illustrating its principles and use; and thorough practice in the analysis of industrial and business operations. BlueCard® certification in MTM-1 will be issued to successful candidates.

MTM-2™: MTM-1 or MTM-1 Base is a prerequisite. This 5-day course covers the theory and application of MTM-2. Laboratory practice in the use of MTM-2 is provided. BlueCard® certification in MTM-2 will be issued to successful candidates.

MTM-UAS™: MTM-1 or MTM-1 Base is a prerequisite. This 5-day course covers the theory and application of MTM-UAS. Laboratory practice in the use of MTM-UAS is provided. BlueCard® certification in MTM-UAS will be issued to successful candidates.

MTM-MEK™: MTM-1 or MTM-1 Base is a prerequisite. This 5-day course covers the theory and application of MTM-MEK. Laboratory practice in the use of MTM-MEK is provided. BlueCard® certification in MTM-MEK will be issued to successful candidates.

MTM-SD™: MTM-1 certification is a prerequisite. This 5-day course includes coverage of the building block system, basic data, laboratory problems illustrating its principles and use; and thorough practice in the analysis of business operations. BlueCard® certification in MTM-SD will be issued to successful candidates.

Specialized Courses

PROKON™: (Design for Assembly) This 2-day course includes coverage of the theory and principles of ProKon; laboratory problems illustrating its principles and use. BlueCard® certification in ProKon will be issued to successful candidates.

Ergonomics: No prerequisite. This 5-day course dealing with ergonomic factors that affect productivity and employee well-being. Techniques used in the evaluation and improvement of the work environment are reviewed. BlueCard® certification in Ergonomics will be issued to successful candidates.

Principles of Standard Data Construction: This 5-day course is designed to provide a clear understanding of how to accurately develop and effectively use standards built from lower level time blocks. The course takes a common sense approach to the teaching of standard data construction.

MTM-B: (Benchmarking) This 2-day course includes coverage of the theory and principles of MTM-B. BlueCard® certification in MTM-B will be issued to successful candidates.

Software Courses

We also offer a course to teach users of the TiCon Base how to effectively implement the system for work measurement and standard data construction.

TICON™: This 1-day course includes coverage of the use of TiCon Base for the application and development of MTM based elements

There is no prerequisite for our specialized ergonomics class. This 5-day course deals with ergonomic factors, such as physical stress and comfort, that have the potential to affect productivity and employee well-being. Our instructors will review techniques that our system uses in the evaluation and improvement of the work environment. Upon successful completion of the course, candidates will be awarded BlueCard® certification in Ergonomics.

History

History of MTM Association

The MTM Association was established in 1951, with the sole purpose to promote the use of MTM-based work measurement in industry. MTM offered a Predetermined Time System called MTM-1, which is the basis for all MTM Systems. The original data was developed between 1943 and 1948 by the Westinghouse Corporation and was donated to MTM in 1951. It was validated by various universities and organizations between1952 and 1968. A joint research committee developed the Universal Analyzing System (MTM-UAS) between 1976 and 1978. Today, MTM-UAS is the most commonly used predetermined time analyzing system, globally. Research by the MTM Association and its sister organizations has led to the continual expansion of the family of MTM analysis tools in use today. Throughout the world today, over 80% of all work standards developed with a predetermined time analyzing system are developed with MTM systems. MTM systems are the standard to which all other work measurement systems are compared.

MTM Associations around the world, now more than 30 in total, provided training, certification, and software. MTM Associations are located on every continent, with the newest MTM Association being established in India this year. These non-profit associations are all part of the International MTM Directorate (IMD). The IMD originated in the United States and recently was relocated to a globally central location to best serve the needs of the MTM community of associations. The MTM SoftwareHouse was established in Dresden, Germany to meet the growing demand to incorporate MTM System into the current hardware and software technologies. To meet our members’ needs for consulting services a separate business entity, the MTM Group, was established in 6 locations around the world. There are over 600 association members that employ over 4 million workers. Collectively MTM employs over 200 Engineers, Instructors, and Project Managers.

The United States MTM Association has long been the innovation leader of MTM and continues to develop new and innovative analysis tools and teaching aides. The U.S. MTM Association seeks funding from organizations who wish to help support the U.S. economy through a strong middle class, by helping MTM to support manufacturing industries, and in the future by helping MTM to expand our offerings to the service sector.

Introduction to MTM Systems

MTM is the abbreviation of Methods-Time Measurement. Methods-Time Measurement means that the time required to perform a specific task depends on the method chosen for the activity. Therefore, by establishing a relationship between a recognized method and an accepted standard time, an unbiased and objective work measurement system was created. The MTM method was first published in the book “Methods-Time Measurement” in 1948. Since that time, MTM has been used both as an analytical tool for directly analyzing manual work processes, as well as, a tool for developing standardized building blocks from the MTM basic system (MTM-1). These building blocks are being used to economically describe, quantify, and design a wide range of work processes.

Compared to other systems of predetermined times, MTM enjoys the greatest worldwide distribution as an instrument of industrial engineering and time management. In addition, building block systems were developed based on MTM-1 for application in different process types (mass production, batch production and one-of-a-kind and small variable batch production). MTM offers a worldwide uniform standard for businesses to use in describing and quantifying manual work processes. In the early 1990s, MTM began the transformation from a system of predetermined times to a system of productivity management tools.

Today, the MTM method includes a framework of MTM building block systems used to model the full range of work processes. Within a production system, MTM serves the function of a common language providing a standard for design, as well as, serving as the basis for measurements, comparisons and modifications made at all levels of this system.

The MTM basic system (MTM-1) forms the basis of the MTM building block systems. It conveys the main features of the MTM method and forms the basis for the understanding and application of additional building block systems in such fields of application as product and equipment design, work process and work method design, ergonomic design of work systems and the continuous improvement of processes running in the most diverse company environments.

Development of the MTM Basic System (MTM-1)

The essential impulse for the development of MTM came from the work of Fred W. Taylor (1856 – 1915) and, in particular, Frank B. Gilbreth (1868 – 1924). Gilbreth came to the realization that the run time for a process controlled by a person (manual activity)

  • with the same practice (skill)
  • with the same qualification (ability) and
  • with the same effort (exertion)

within reasonable limits is solely dependent upon the method utilized to complete the task.

In filming numerous Motion Sequences, Gilbreth determined that human motions can be reduced to 17 motion elements, which he called therbligs, a name he derived from rearranging the letters of his own last name. These 17 motions were the “precursors” of the MTM Basic Motions.

MTM was developed by the American industrial scientists: H. B. Maynard, J. L. Schwab, and G. J. Stegemerten and published in the book “Methods-Time Measurement” (1948), which summarizes the basics of the MTM methodology. This formed the basis for research conducted in the 1950’s and 1960’s by the U.S. MTM Association for Standards and Research. Both “Methods-Time Measurement” published in 1948 by Maynard, Schwab and Stegemerten and the subsequent published research reports serve as the “genetic material” for MTM-1.

In order to distinguish the Basic Motions from each other and calculate their time requirements, a large number of industrial work processes were filmed. The actual times were calculated by counting the number of frames per motion (film speed of 16 frames/second). The method of obtaining data is described in full in the text by Maynard, Schwab and Stegemerten. For other motions, e.g., for Walk, the actual times were calculated with the help of time studies.

The time values resulting from the original research were leveled using an American system of performance rating, the LMS System. This method gets its name from the first initials of its originators (Lowry, Maynard, and Stegemerten). The LMS System of leveling considers the following four features in assessing performance: Skill, Effort, Consistency, and Conditions.

Performance at 100% is described in the book Methods-Time Measurement as being:

“…the equivalent of the much-discussed fair day’s work. It was to represent an effort level that could be easily maintained year in and year out by the physically normal operator without in any way requiring him to draw upon his reserves of energy.”

Conclusion

MTM systems have gained the reputation for consistency and fairness.  MTM is widely accepted by unions around the world as providing a fair and consistent standard for work. From the German Works Council (National Union):

“After years of experience, the works council has no particular concerns about the use of the MTM technique”, further, “We have determined that in general our members prefer to work at MTM workplaces.”

MTM systems develop a work standard that both the employer and employee can agree is consistent and fair.

Royalty Free System

MTM is an open system, but it is not in the public domain. MTM systems are proprietary with the copyrights owned by the International MTM Directorate (IMD). All users, trained from an authorized source, are free to use the MTM systems for their business purposes, but are restricted from commercializing the products.  MTM does not charge royalties for the use of these systems.

MTM Association and Iowa State Partnership

MTM has developed a partnership with Iowa State University, where they offer a few of our courses on their campuses.

Iowa State University offers our MTM-UAS course now, and very soon, in the summer of 2015, the campus will offer our MTM-1 Base course. MTM-1 Base

MTM-1 Base

Course: The MTM-1 Base course explores the basics of the very first building block of the MTM systems, so there is no prerequisite. The 3-day course covers the foundation of MTM-1 while using lab problems and a variety of exercises to illustrate its principles and application. If the student has not already received a BlueCard certification from the MTM-1, this class is the minimum prerequisite for MTM-2, MTM-UAS and MTM-MEK. Upon successful completion of MTM-1 Base, the student will receive a certificate of completion.

MTM-MEK™

MTM-MEK™

System: MTM-MEK accounts for the special demands of processes exhibiting the characteristic of one-of-a-kind or small batch production.  The application conditions can be described through the following aspects:

  • order-oriented production of products with little or no repetition
  • large number of product types and varieties
  • long-cycle or non-cyclic work processes
  • constant changes in the work processes and conditions
  • relatively low degree of routine
  • limited possibilities of detailed work instructions with the associated result of increased variation in the work method

Typical application areas exist in companies involved in machine and steel construction, plant construction, aircraft construction, as well as, in the areas of maintenance and repair, logistics, set-up, and change-over work.

Course: MTM-MEK system is a third-generation building block of the MTM-1 method and uses the same statistical analysis of data. This system was created for businesses that produce small lot or one-of-a-kind projects that also have long cycle times or are not performed frequently. We will cover the theory and application of the MTM-MEK system using laboratory practice and successful candidates will receive BlueCard® certification in MTM-MEK at the end of the course.

Duration: 5 days; Normally held M-F.

Prerequisite: Students must have completed MTM-1 or MTM-1Base.

System: MTM-SD was developed for processes exhibiting a high method level. The basic values represent a simplified building block system based directly on MTM-1. The following application conditions would indicate that MTM-SD is the system of choice:

  • production with a high degree of repetition
  • longer-cycle work processes
  • detail-designed processed
  • work instruction with precise description of methods
  • deviation in individual operator methods can be detected

Typical application areas exist in companies with high volume or bach production, such as supplier plant for vehicle construction and electronic production.

MTM-UAS™

MTM-UAS™

System: MTM-UAS was developed for processes exhibiting the characteristic features of batch production. The following should exist as application conditions:

  • order-oriented production of a repetitive nature
  • repeatable work content despite a large range of product types and varieties
  • length of work cycles considerable longer than in high-volume production
  • defined general conditions for work processes
  • designed processes
  • experienced employees
  • work instruction without detailed description of methods

Typical application areas exist in companies involved in vehicle construction, supplier plants for vehicle construction, tool building, electronic production and logistics.

Course: This 5-day course educates students about the theory and application of MTM-UAS. Here, we’ll use laboratory practice to explore the theory and application of MTM-UAS, a second-generation building block of the MTM system. The MTM-UAS system is based on statistical analysis of the 17 basic MTM-1 motion patterns and is ideal for environments that produce in batches. If a candidate has successfully completed the course, they will be awarded with BlueCard® certification in MTM-UAS.

System: Principles of Standard Data is an engineered approach to work measurement itself. The course is designed to each the process of developing standard data that is quick and easy to apply and also accurate and consistent in time determination. ProKon™

ProKon™

System: ProKon was developed as a tool for use by the design engineers and others in the earliest stages of the product development process. ProKon stands for “Production-Oriented Design”. ProKon is a system for analyzing the ease of assembly of components and parts during product development. The assessment yields constructive approaches for insuring that the final product design meets the need for ease-of-assembly. The assessment is based on a point system, which takes into account manufacturability factors that can be addressed in the product development phase. The quantified assessment of these Influencing Factors provides the engineer with the option of comparing alternative solutions during product development.

The application of ProKon allow for the evaluation of manufacturing costs while in the early stages of production design – all this without detailed knowledge of the expected assembly situation. ProKon can be used to asses newly developed production, as well as, existing products The Influencing Factors were selected such that the design engineer can make all the necessary decisions quickly and easily with his existing expertise and without additional information.

Course; This 2-day Design for Assembly course includes coverage of the theory and principles of the ProKon software. It includes laboratory problems to illustrate ProKon’s principles and use and BlueCard® certification in ProKon will be issued to students upon successful completion of the course.

R.R. 110 A STUDY OF POSITIONING MOVEMENTS III – Application to Industrial Work Measurement. This report, the second on position, relates the results of the position research to the field of application. This study deals with actual industrial operators, work measurement tools and improving manual activity through a better understanding of positioning movements.

R.R. 111 INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH ON THE ELEMENT APPLY PRESSURE – Examines the element “Apply Pressure” under factory conditions. The report contains a descriptive analysis of the fundamental structure of the element Apply Pressure along with numerical data gathered in the research.

R.R. 112 LEARNING CURVE RESEARCH ON SHORT-CYCLE OPERATION – A report of the first of a series of experiments which have been performed to determine how people learn the most common MTM motions. This is the preliminary or “laboratory” phase of the project, Learning. This phase of the Learning project provided a series of prediction equations for the most frequently used elements.

R.R. 113A LEARNING CURVE RESEARCH ON MANUAL OPERATIONS – Presents the results of Learning. The report details a method of combining the Learning Curves of R.R. 112 to develop a prediction equation covering an overall learning Curve for a manual operation.

R.R. 114 FACTORS IN MANUAL SKILL TRAINING – Results of four years’ study at the University of Michigan on the various factors involved in the learning process required to attain a manual skill, especially the learning that occurs after the person barely knows how to do the operation.

R.R. 115 PREDICTION OF ELEMENTAL MOTION PERFORMANCE USING PERSONNEL SELECTION TESTS – A general methodology for predicting the level of performance an individual should be able to attain when working on a manual task where a pre-determined time standard is a measure of his performance. Who We Are

Mike Mitchell, Executive Director

Mike Mitchell is a 30 year veteran in the successful implementation of tens of millions of dollars in profitability improvements through the application of Lean techniques and work measurement methods. As Manager of Manufacturing Services, Plant Manager and Director of Operations for major corporations such as Cooper Industries and Maysteel, Mike has successfully applied his skills in both union and union free environments, spearheading lean transformation including the use of Ergonomic and Safety evaluation tools. Mike holds a degree in Engineering from Southern Illinois University and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration.

In his position as Executive Director of MTM Association, Mike has regular contact with the highest levels of corporate management where his expertise is widely recognized. Mike serves the MTM Community as both an Instructor and Consultant.

Dirk Rauglas, International Authority on MTM Systems and Lead Instructor

Dirk has over 35 years of experience and is internationally recognized as an expert in the area of Industrial Engineering, having spoken at the request of the Minister of Health for South Africa and The Ministry of Health for Israel (Industrial Engineering in Healthcare) as well as the government of China (Profitability Improvement in Manufacturing). He has published numerous technical papers for various engineering journals and has worked to create training materials used to train Industrial Engineers throughout the world. After working for 10 years in private industry, most recently as Manager of Industrial Engineering and Quality Control for Bell & Howell Company, Mr. Rauglus joined MTM Association for Standards and Research where he rose to the position of Executive Director. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the International MTM directorate and has served as Board President.

Dirk has recognized around the world for his expertise in MTM Systems. He has given numerous speeches various technical venues around the world. Dirk continues to share his knowledge as an Instructor at the MTM Association.

The MTM (short for Methods-Time Measurement) work philosophy is a carefully-honed and time-honored group of building blocks for managing the workflow of modern businesses. Each systematic procedure functions by improving methods and establishing time standards for a variety of industries and organizations, and by evolving to fit the growing needs of each user.

The MTM System works by recognizing, classifying and describing the motions used or required to perform a given operation. It then assigns predetermined time standards to each motion to promote efficiency and profitability.

  • MTM-1®
    MTM-1 is the basic building block from which all other MTM systems have been developed. This timeless system, which is used worldwide, determines the time necessary for performing a given operation by analyzing the manual motions required and assigning a time value to each. MTM-1 is ideally suited to use in mass production environments with permanent short-cycle repetitions.
  • MTM-UAS®
    MTM-UAS represents a second generation of synthesized data, based on the MTM-1 system. It was constructed through use of statistical analysis of basic MTM-1 motion patterns. It has what we consider to be a medium capacity for work manner diversity. This system is best-suited in environments that use batch or serial production or similar processes.
  • MTM-MEK®
    MTM-MEK, a third-generation system based on statistical analysis of MTM-1 data, is designed for economical measurement of small lot or one-of-a-kind unit production with long cycle times. MTM-MEK is also ideal for other infrequently-performed tasks that were once considered too costly or difficult to measure, as it has a high capacity for work manner diversity.
